Case Study of Grey Water Management at Ariyanendhal Village in Ramanathapuram District
BEST PRACTICES OF GREY WATER MANAGEMENT
AT
ARIYANENDHAL VILLAGE PANCHAYAT
RAMANATHAPURAM DISTRICT
Introduction:
Ariyanedal Village
Panchayat is one of the 39 Village Panchayats in Paramakudi Block,
Ramanathapuram District on the Madurai - Rameswaram National Highway. The village panchayat has 761 families with
total population of 2560 spread over two hamlets namely Ariyanendal and
vagaikulam.
First Success of Ariyanendal Village Panchayat:
Prior to the Year 2012 village panchayat had only 10% toilet
coverage and was surrounded by prosopis
julifiora, an invasive species which is predominately used for Charcoal making by the villagers.
People of the village used to openly defecate in nearby prosopis jungles
and wild scrub trees. As a consequence,
village was seeing a greater number of water borne diseases and poor behavior and
compliances to personal Hygiene among villagers. Hence village was looking
shabby and unpleasantful.
Hence as a first step, action was taken to remove
all the jungles around the village as a result DRDA removed 23 acres of jungle land
and converted it into cultivable land.
After recovery of 23 acres of land 13000 saplings
in massive tree plantation activities were carried out and converted the barren
land to beautiful forest. This initiative took away the nearby open defecation area
traditionally used by villagers in their vicinity.
A Grey Water Management initiative: Problem
There was no proper disposal of wastewater in the village panchayat. This caused major inconvenience for motorists and also stagnant water in long streets. The panchayat representatives and public were constantly complaining to district administration about the poor wastewater management in the village. The 8 streets were narrow, disorganized. Hence, providing individual soak pit was a bigger concern due to unavailability of land.
Grey Water Management: Action
- Transect walk was done by village level
motivators along with enthusiastic villagers. Special Grama Sabha was convened
by village panchayat president and all ward members. People were motivated to
participate in the special sanitation Gram Sabha. A village wastewater map was
drawn, and all households were plotted on the map with active inputs from
villagers. A total number of 410 houses were identified on the south side of
the National Highway and 273 houses on north side.
- Mapping of Sewages source and destination points
were done
- Drawing a village level grey water management
plan was carried out
- Need assessment was carried out and number individual soak pits, Community soak pits, Vertical and Horizontal soak pits, drainage work were identified.
- DRDA took a special initiative to saturate the grey water demand works for gap closure from executives schemes
DRDA was able to lay 1100 m of sewage pipeline and vertical public suction pit were erected at 5 places at the end point of pipeline to carry the grey water to the community soak pit. This resulted in narrow street becoming cleaner streets. All these narrow streets were laid with paver block under MGNREGS, 15th Finance Commission and Other Schemes. A complete makeover and new look were given to all streets of Ariyanendal panchayat. In addition, 273 households having sufficient land availability and a total number of 45 community soak pits were setup under MGNREGS Scheme.
