Saturation in sanitation at Pappankuzhi Panchayat of Kanchipuram District - A Steps for the Pollution free Environment by the DRDA

 

BEST PRACTICES UNDER SBM (G) PHASE II

PAPPANKUZHI VILLAGE PANCHAYAT, Kanchipuram

 INTRODUCTION:  

            Pappankuzhi is one among the 58 Village Panchayats under the administrative control of Sriperumbudur block, Kancheepuram District of Tamil Nadu.             

           This village Panchayat having 254 households with total population of 1016 spread over two habitations has been selected during the year 2021-22 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) as a Pilot Village Panchayat on Saturation Mode.

IMPLEMENTATION OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT:

               Under the Solid Waste Management component, the Household Wastes are collected from the doorsteps through the Thooimai Kaavalar engaged for this purpose.

              The SWM arrangements available in Pappankuzhi are,

·         No. of Tri cycle                  - 1

·         No. of Bins                        - 3

·         Compost Pits                     - 3

·         Vermi-composting pits        - 9

·         Segregation cum storage shed - 1

·         No. of Thooimai kaavalar - 1   

             The quantity of waste generated is around 41 kg per day. These Solid wastes are taken to the Segregation sheds and segregated on daily basis.

              Bio-degradable wastes are sent for composting to the 2 compost pits available in the Village Panchayat. The Bio-Degradable wastes after decomposition are gathered, sun dried, sieved and sent to the vermi composting shed for conversion as Vermi Composts through earth worms. Such Vermi composts are currently used for nourishing the Mass Tree Plantations planted under MGREGS.

             The non-Biodegradable wastes are further segregated as recyclables and non- recyclables and handled appropriately.

 OUTCOMES OF BEST PRACTICES:

·         Disposal and treatment of solid waste management has been done in an effective manner.

·         This kind of solid waste management activities were undertaken by Swachh Bharat Mission (G), and it brings improvement in cleanliness, hygiene and the general quality of life in rural areas.

·         The Visual cleanliness of the village was ensured and also creates employment opportunities to the local community.                 

IMPLEMENTATION OF GREY WATER MANAGEMENT:

                      Approximately daily 35 kilo litres of grey water were generated and there was no proper disposal mechanism available in the village. So, the grey water from this village is directly let into the streets and water bodies.  

 SURVEY ON ‘GWM’ TO DECLARE AS MODEL VILLAGE:

           A survey was conducted to identify the grey water management facility required for the village.

·         Transect walk was conducted to identify the GWM facilities required to saturate the village.

·         Mapping of source of sewage, disposal methods, discharge points were identified, and village level plan was drawn.

·         The number of community soak pits, individual soak pits and drainage works were identified.

CONSRUCTION OF INDIVIDUAL SOAK PITS:

          Households having own spaces were provided with individual household soak pits.

CONSTRUCTION OF DRAINAGE:

               To dispose the grey water effectively, 420 metres of CC drains have been constructed under 15th CFC scheme and 81 households connected with this drainage. Further 480 metres of CC drain have been constructed under 15 CFC scheme and now 80 households connected with this drainage.

              Thus, the households not having own spaces in Pappankuzhi Village Panchayat was connected with drainage and discharge the grey water effectively to vertical and horizontal filters.

CONSTRUCTION OF COMMUNITY SOAK PITS:

            The households, which are not having own spaces for constructing individual soak pits were linked with drainage channel and safely dispose the grey water in community soak pits.

OUTCOMES OF BEST PRACTICES:

              By these Grey water management methods, the Pappankuzhi Village Panchayat was completely saturated.i.e. every household in Pappankuzhi was connected with individual soak pit or community soak pits through drainage.

             Grey water from kitchen, cloth washing areas are channelized through drains to the community soak pits. The filtered water is let out to Periya Eri. This treatment method helps to prevent the water body from pollution.

CONSTRUCTION OF INDIVIDUAL HOUSEHOLD LATRINES:

        The Village of Pappankuzhi has been sustaining the Open Defecation Free status now.

          Out of 254 households, 29 households without toilets but with sufficient space have been identified and Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs) have been constructed under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

         Another 28 Households without suitable space for construction of Toilets utilize the IWSC in the Village Panchayat.

         A Community Sanitary Complex is under construction in Pappankuzhi to help ease the villagers need for proximity to Toilets. At present IWSC is being used by these villagers.

CONCLUSION:

            By all these activities under SBM (G), Pappankuzhi Village Panchayat became a Model Village Panchayat, and it achieved the 100% end to end management of grey water. SWM and GWM activities brings improvement in Visual cleanliness, hygiene and the general quality of life in rural areas.
