Micro Composting Centre (MCC)-As Revenue Generating Model

INTRODUCTION:

    In Cuddalore District, Under Swachh Bharath Mission’s (SBM) – Solid Waste Management (SWM) Component, 7 Micro Compost Centre's (MCC) have been set up at 7 Village Panchayats in 7 Blocks in the Financial year 2021-22.

IMPLEMETATION OF MICRO COMPOSTING CENTRE`S:

    The Micro Compost Centre's have been acting as an important infrastructure to convert household and bulk Generator's bio-degradable wastes like fruits, Vegetables, Leaves and others into manure. A dedicated team of trained 5 Thooimai Kaavalars have been assigned a waste collection route to collect waste from houses and vegetables/fruit shops. Block Co-Ordinator of each block is the supervising officer for effective monitoring of Micro Compost Centre's


ORIENTATION & TRAININGS TO THE STAKEHOLDERS AT MCC:

    The Thooimai Kaavalars were given District level training about collection of waste, shredding, weight measurement, use of EM (Effective Microbial) Solution, depositing the shredded waste into pits, monitoring the 45 days period, sieving /drying of manure at Micro Compost Centre at Cuddalore Municipal Corporation in the Months of October and November

QUALITY TESTING OF MANURES:

    Effective training and monitoring in all 7 Micro Compost Centre have resulted in timely generation of over 2500 Kgs of manure combined in the 7 Micro Compost Centre's. As a novel attempt to ensure quality, the samples of each Micro Compost Centre have been tested and certified at Krishi Vijayan Kendra (KVK), Vridhachalam for parameters like pH, EC (Electrical Conductivity), Nitrogen(N) Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K).

OUTCOMES FROM MICRO COMPOSTING CENTRES:

    The quality tested manure is packed in 10 Kg bags and are sold to farmers, Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) and other at a Nominal rate of Rs. 10Kg. Also, in addition to the above marketing approach, District Rural Development Agency, Cuddalore has sold an initial quantity of 500 Kg to Horticulture Department generating Rs. 5000. District Collector, Cuddalore handed over the first Consignment of manure to Horticulture Officials and received the Cheque for Rs. 5000/- on behalf of District Rural Development Agency in the Month of February.


CONCLUSION

    Positive response to the sale of the 1st Batch manure has motivated the teams of Micro Compost Centre's to further improve waste collection and generation of manure. To Market the manure produced, District Rural Development Agency has tied up with self Help Groups (SHG) of Cuddalore block to reach more people in the district in coming days. District Rural Development Agency, Cuddalore is planning to upscale manure generation at these Micro Compost Centre and convert them into sustainable revenue generation infrastructures in coming days.
